Chin Rainbows

Chin Rainbows

Last Summer as I was kneeling on my sofa looking out my window at the pouring rain, I saw a big huge truck pull up at the empty house across the street.
Somehow, seeing that big huge truck made the sad feeling in my tummy go away.  Mamma said, “It’s the rain baby girl, soon it will be sunny outside and you can go out and play!” My mamma knows everything so I did believe her.
I watched as a blue car pulled up behind the big huge truck.  A mamma, a daddy and a little girl got out.  I squinted my eyes so I could see a little better through the raindrops on the glass.
The men in the truck and the family started taking furniture into the house!  A new family for me to meet!!  I wanted to go right over but Mamma made me wait.  She made me wait for 2 days before I went over.  That was forever!!
I first saw my new friend Penny (after my second day of waiting) she was swinging on a porch swing outside their house.
I walked over and said, “Hi there, I’m Lizzie P. Abernathy, what’s your name?”
“I’m Penny.” From that day on Penny and I became the best of friends.
One day mamma was talking to Pappa and I heard her say Penny’s name and the words Down Syndrome.  I’m not sure what that is, but I’m glad it’s in Penny!!  She’s the most fun  ever!
When we have ice cream, Penny’s runs all down her chin in lines of brown, pink and white.  It’s a chin rainbow, I say so.  We laugh about Penny’s chin rainbows.
When we do summersaults mine are straight and I land on my feet.  When Penny does hers, she goes all sideways and ends up rolling all over my yard and laughing with me then we become the Rolly Polly twins, that’s what we call us!
One day Penny and I decided to dig our way to China.  We each got a spoon from our mamma’s silverware drawer and started digging.
The dirt was wet and brown and gooey. We saw lots of worms.  Penny saved them and put them all in a jar and gave each one a name.  I never even ever thought of naming a worm.  Penny is so clever!  We didn’t get to China but later that day we had made friends with Margaret, Matilda and Matthew.  They all seemed to be smiling at us when we put them back in our “China Hole.”
I like to swing with Penny on my swing set.  Her red hair is so shiny when the sun is on it and nobody laughs like Penny does when we sing our silly songs.  (We totally make them up as we swing)
We sometimes color in my coloring book.  I stay in the lines but Penny likes to color outside the lines.  It’s ok, the colors she picks are always the brightest!
Once we dressed up in our Mammas clothes and put on our Mamma’s makeup.  I had pink lipstick on and Penny had LOTS of red on her lips.  She laughed when she saw it and said, “Look, I’m not Mamma, I’m a clown!”
Sometimes Mary Beth Swenson  laughs at Penny and says she’s too silly and that she looks funny.  My tummy sometimes hurts when she says that and me and Penny just walk away and sometimes Penny cries but not for long because I tickle her and that always makes her laugh.
I still don’t know about this word Down Syndrome.  All I know is that no one that I know can do a summersault like Penny!

  1. My face might be different

    But my feelings the same

    I laugh and I cry

And I take pride in my gains

I was sent here among you

    To teach you to love

    As god in the heavens

    Looks down from above

    To him I’m no different

    His love knows no bounds

    It’s those here among you

    In cities and towns

    That judge me by standards

    That man has imparted

    But this family I’ve chosen

    Will help me get started

For I’m one of the children

    So special and few

    That came here to learn

    The same lessons as you

    That love is acceptance

It must come from the heart

We all have the same purpose

    Though not the same start

    The Lord gave me life

    To live and embrace

And I’ll do as you do

    But at my own pace.
